How VAT works on asset finance

Upfront on hire purchase, spread on leases — and what VAT deferral means for cash flow.

Written by Asset Finance Co Editorial TeamLast verified 6 November 2026General information, not a finance recommendation

The useful starting point

VAT can change the cash required on day one and the timing of recovery. It should be modelled alongside the finance structure, not treated as a footnote after the monthly payment has been chosen.

A practical route through the decision

From question to quote

01

Define the need

Asset, supplier, timing and the business outcome.

02

Check the cash

Deposit, VAT, payment shape and a cautious forecast.

03

Compare the terms

Total cost, fees, ownership and final obligations.

04

Ask with context

Send a decision-ready brief before any formal application.

Hire purchase

VAT on the asset price is usually paid at the start. VAT-registered businesses can generally reclaim it in their next return, and some lenders will defer the VAT for a few months to bridge the gap.

Finance lease

VAT is normally charged on each rental instead, spreading the cost across the term rather than requiring a lump sum upfront.

Not VAT registered?

If you can't reclaim VAT, the structure you choose can noticeably change your cash flow. Ask your accountant to model both options.

Separate the VAT question from the rate question

Create a simple cash timeline showing the net asset price, VAT, deposit, first payment, future rentals and the expected reclaim date. Then repeat it for each structure being considered. A business may be able to reclaim VAT, but the timing and amount depend on its registration, invoice evidence, business use and accountant’s treatment. The finance rate cannot compensate for a day-one VAT gap that the cash forecast has ignored.

Check the invoice and agreement together

Ask whether installation, delivery, software, conversion work or other soft costs are included in the financed amount and how VAT applies to each component. Confirm whether the supplier invoices the lender or the business, when VAT is charged and whether any deferral is conditional. Keep the supplier invoice, finance proposal and VAT assumptions together so the accountant can review the actual transaction rather than an abbreviated headline figure.

In practice

Model the day-one cash

A quote should separate the asset price, VAT, deposit, fees and any deferred amount. The monthly figure alone can hide a substantial delivery payment, especially where the business must pay VAT before reclaiming it.

In practice

Treatment is agreement-specific

VAT treatment can differ between hire purchase, finance lease, operating arrangements, installation work and bundled services. The supplier invoice and agreement wording matter, so a general rule should never replace professional advice.

In practice

Ask for a cash-flow view

Show when VAT is paid, when it may be reclaimed, what happens if the reclaim is delayed and how the payments interact with wages, stock and existing commitments. This turns a tax question into a useful funding decision.

Questions answered

Ask these before you proceed

When is the VAT paid?+

The answer depends on the agreement type and how the supplier invoices the transaction.

Can VAT be deferred?+

Some lenders offer a short deferral feature, subject to status and terms.

What if we cannot reclaim VAT?+

The non-reclaimable amount changes the true cash cost and should be included in the comparison.
